What a beautiful day on the South Coast! Sunny, temperatures in the low 70’s, and birds singing, especially the mocking bird which wakes me up very early in the morning. That bird has an unlimited repertoire of songs. It will imitate almost any sound it seems.
I didn’t do my usual morning walk today as I had an early class at Adult Education. I am back to taking a basket weaving class after a 2 year absence. This is probably my 10th year of doing this. Over that time I have made many baskets using all kinds of materials. It takes me a while to get back into the routine of it. I also have a lot of unfinished baskets lying around. I usually take one with me when we travel but rarely do I even think about working on it. The easiest to travel with are the coiled baskets as they require few tools and materials. I do have a few of those in progress. The latest one uses the welt from upholstery as the coil. I started it with green yarn and used that for the bottom and then switched to raffia for the sides. When I complete it will be used in the RV as a bread basket.
This is a similar basket to the one I am working on. It is made of Dracena, a Yucca like plant which has longer leaves than Yucca. It must be soaked in water for two days to make it pliable but when dry it becomes like iron. The new one will not have a handle.
